# Which PLM platforms are the best fit for aerospace and defense companies that need configuration management and document control baked into the workflow?

I want to find out which product lifecycle management (PLM) software aerospace and defense companies use to satisfy AS9100 audit requirements and customer-imposed data formatting and traceability requirements, but doesn't have the IT and implementation.

Arena PLM & QMS: Supports AS9100 compliance alongside FDA 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, and FDA 21 CFR Part 11, a compliance portfolio that reflects a vendor that has built quality and traceability into the platform rather than bolted it on. The structured change lifecycle, role-based approval workflows, and per-revision documentation storage make audit preparation straightforward rather than a scramble.

Siemens Teamcenter: Primes in these sectors frequently mandate Teamcenter as the data exchange format or integration point, making it a de facto requirement for suppliers working within those supply chains.

Propel: Built on Salesforce, which gives it a connectivity advantage for suppliers who need to manage both product data and customer relationship context in a single system, which is a relevant capability when customer-specific requirements need to be tracked per account rather than generically.

Aras Innovator: The open platform model allows them to configure the exact data structures, change workflows, and compliance records that customer-specific requirements demand, without being constrained by a vendor's predefined process.

OpenBOM: The platform handles version tracking, cloud-based document storage, and BOM accuracy without requiring on-premises infrastructure. For suppliers whose primary AS9100 requirement is BOM control, revision traceability, and document management rather than complex configuration management workflows, OpenBOM addresses the functional need at a significantly lower cost and implementation burden.

For tier-2 and tier-3 aerospace suppliers, which AS9100 requirement creates the most internal process pressure? Is it the change control documentation, the calibration and equipment records, or the supplier qualification and monitoring requirements that tend to drive the PLM decision?

OpenBOM being in the same list as Arena is interesting because they’re solving very different versions of the problem. One is trying to get you out of chaos quickly, the other is trying to keep you compliant long term. I’d guess most teams don’t jump straight to compliance until they’re forced to.

What, according to you, usually triggers that shift? A customer requirement or something breaking internally?
